ROTOTO: 101
ROTOTO's manufacturing hub is in Nara prefecture, one of the historical sites in Japan. Especially in Koryo-cho, a small town that is famous for its socks.
In fact, 40% of all the socks made in Japan come from this town.
This socks region of Japan has a long history dating back to 1910.
It all started when a yarn wholesaler named Taijiro Yoshii went on a business trip to the United States. While there, he bought a socks knitting machine and brought it back to his hometown in Japan.
He then gathered the locals and taught them how to use the machine to manufacture western-style socks. The area quickly became known for its high-quality socks, and soon other regional businesses began producing socks as well. Today, even though the scale has shrunk, the socks region of Japan is still renowned for its sock-making skills.
As the ROTOTO designer grow-up locally, socks manufacturing was part of his life as his mom and relatives would work from time to time to support the local business. He felt this was part of his heritage and started ROTOTO in 2014 with the principle of creating “ expendable goods that you can love for life”「一生愛せる消耗品」.
In the beginning, when he started ROTOTO, he visited all the regional socks factories. By talking face to face, he got to know very well with the craftsman and women to share his brand vision and the passion and dream to put the area back on the map with the historical manufacture of socks. This has given a depth of design and comfort and driven the brand to its current place. However, the designer is always thinking about improving the product experience and will continue to grow with our clients. I look forward to sharing more about ROTOTO in the near future.
